 Edmund in the hospital.

A plane crash took the life of Edmund's wife Maria in 1997. The man responsible for the plane crash, Jim Thomasen, set his sights on Brooke because of her money. He went so far as to get engaged to Brooke when Edmund began to investigate him. Edmund found out he was responsible for the crash and Jim kidnapped Edmund and handcuffed him inside an aquaduct and left him to die.

Brooke managed to find out where he was and she sent Dimitri and Tad to rescue him. In the meantime she arranged to have Jim meet her at Stuart's Art Gallery where she shot and killed him. Dimitri showed up at the gallery just after she killed him and tried to take the blame himself.

Both Julia Barr and John Callahan won emmys for this storyline.

This scene takes place the next day at the hospital where Edmund is recovering from his ordeal in the aquaduct. Edmund is in bed. He and Dimitri just had a long talk about what happened in the aquaduct.

Edmund: Brooke. What happened? Is she okay?

Dimitri: Ah, yeah, yeah. She's ah, tired. She's safe.

Edmund: Thomasen didn't hurt her?

Dimitri shakes his head no.

Edmund: Tell me the police caught up with that slime.

Dimitri: The Thomasen case is closed.

Edmund: They locked him up? No chance of parole?

Dimitri: He's lying in the morgue in Pine Valley.

Edmund: You took him down?

Brooke walks in.

Brooke: I did.

Joe, Hayley and Mateo come in. Brooke is leaning over Edmund giving him a hug. She giggles at something he said which we don't hear and neither does anyone else in the room. It is strictly a private joke between the two of them.

Brooke: (still hugging Edmund) Oh, I've never been so happy to see anybody in my life. (she kisses his neck). With the exception, possibly, of this man. (she points at Mateo) and climbs up on the bed next to Edmund who puts his arm around her.) Can you believe it? He's finally back. (meaning Mateo who had been in a coma and was able to "see" Brooke shoot Jim while in the coma.)

Dimitri: Everything back to normal Mateo?

Mateo: Yeah, except the muscle tone is kind of shot.

Joe: Oh, a few days of intensive therapy he will be bounding around Holidays.

Edmund: You look better than my brother.

There's more chit chat that goes on and finally Brooke tells the story of what happened to Jim.

bnehosp4.jpg

Edmund: (Brooke's playing with his fingers, he's rubbing her back) Ah, it's good to live again. Anybody think we'd be doing that?

Brooke: It's been a long time coming.

Edmund: Wanna talk about Jim? Fill in the gaps? Are you up to it?

Brooke: I think the question is are you?

Edmund: You know me. I like a story with a happy ending.

Mateo: Yeah, I wanna hear this too.

Brooke: I had a gallery of Jim's porn shots of Laura looking afraid and humiliated. (Mateo's visualizing the scene in his mind while Brooke describes it.) I tried to pretend we still had a chance, you know, to keep my anger in check. But Jim was so glib and self-assured it just got more and more difficult. And he wouldn't tell me where Dimitri and Edmund were trapped. He wouldn't tell me anything until I took out the gun. And then he was heading to Pigeon Hollow and it wasn't a bluff and I couldn't let him go. I couldn't let him go and hurt my son. I had to stop him. So I shot him. (Brooke and Edmund are holding hands now) Jim thought I would just stand by and let him go after Jamie. He actually turned his back on me. He started to walk out the door. And after the first shot he turned around. He couldn't believe I had pulled the trigger, the quivering mass of ...woman that I am, which is not at all an inaccurate description.

Dimitri: Come on Brooke. Anyone would've been frightened.

Brooke: I was pathetic and weak for a long time Dimitri.

Hayley: The Brooke I know is a rock.

Brooke: Hayley after that plane crash I fell apart.

Edmund: So did I, Brooke. So did I.

Brooke: You didn't start dating a psychopath. You didn't bring a sick man in to go after your friends and your family.

Edmund: No. I galloped in to save the day and ended up endangering your life.

Brooke: Edmund, how many times did you warn me? I was in denial.

Edmund: I let Him get the jump on me and I left you to fend for yourself.

Brooke: I will not let you take the blame for this.

Dimitri: I should've finished Thomasen off when I had the chance. It should've ended on the beach.

Hayley: Can I ask you guys a question? Why are you all beating your heads against the wall? I mean you nailed a homicidal maniac. You should be toasting each other.

Assistant D.A. Kevin McLean enters the room with Jack.

McLean: Is that a local custom? Celebrating unnatural deaths? Or is it just when the dead's not part of the gang.

Jack: This is Mr. McLean.

McLean: Assistant District Attorney.

Dimitri: Our new junior enforcer.

Jack: Mr. McLean will be handling the Thomasen case. Obviously I'm far too involved.

Dimitri: Jack there's no case.

McLean: You've determined that have you?

Jack: You know Dimitri and Brooke. This is Edmund Grey.

Hayley and Mateo leave so McLean can question Brooke, Dimitri and Edmund.

McLean: I need to ask you a few questions.

Dimitri: Not now. My brother's not up for an interrogation.

Jack: Look, he has to do this, it's routine. Why don't we leave it up to Edmund?

Dimitri: Edmund was chained, left to drown. My brother didn't know if he would survive the night. I'm not going to let him waste his strength, we've been all over this.

Jack: Look, look. Now Edmund needs to answer these questions. I appreciate what you two have been through, I do. But now you're out of line. This is McLean's case. You stay the hell out of his way.

Dimitri: You know every detail. Brooke told you. What she didn't know I filled in. Now Edmund can't tell you anything different.

McLean: You mean he'll stick to the party line.

Edmund: What's that supposed to mean?

McLean: The huddle I just walked in on. It sounded like a strategy session to me.

Dimitri: You are so wrong.

McLean: You've had plenty of time to get your story straight.

Brooke: There is no story. There's just the truth.

McLean: The truth as told by you and your friends.

Edmund: Wait, wait. You think there's some kind of conspiracy?

McLean: What I think right now based on this encounter is that there's no point in interviewing you now.

Dimitri: There isn't any story. No one's lied about Jim Thomasen.

McLean: And that would explain your statement from last night.

Edmund: What statement was that Dimitri?

McLean: Last night your brother claimed that he shot Jim Thomasen. That is what you said, isn't it?

Dimitri: It was just a breaking action.

McLean: Designed to gum up the wheels of justice?

Dimitri: No. I'm trying to stop a small minded zealot from from misinterpreting Mrs. English's statement.

Jack: Alright, alright. Look, you have been going for almost seventy two hours without a break and I suggest you take one. And I mean right now.

Dimitri: Alright Jack. That's the first good idea you've come up with. I'll clean up. I'll be right back. Peggy brought me some clothes. Joe said I could use a shower. Whatever my brother tells you is the truth. Hopefully you'll recognize it.

McLean: Will you stay Miss English?

Brooke: I don't have a problem with that.

Edmund: I do. Brooke needs to rest.

Brooke: I'm fine Edmund, really.

Jack: I'd very much appreciate it if you'd cooperate with Mr. McLean here. And you, I want you to fill me in the minute you're through.

McLean: Mr. Grey what exactly was your relationship with Mr. Thomasen?

Edmund: My relationship? Well for starters he murdered my wife and most of the passengers on flight 149. Then he tried to kill my brother-in-law and his wife, put him in a coma. Then he tried to kill me. Then he tried to kill my brother. So I'd say I hated his guts. I tracked down Judy Morton at Roway Prison she told me all that Thomasen had done to her.

McLean: What she claimed he'd done.

Edmund: Look she had no reason to lie. And it wasn't easy for her to open up. She was scared of Thomasen for good reason.

McLean: Well, she was killed by another inmate.

Edmund: Thomasen ordered a hit.

McLean: Why would he do that?

Edmund: Same reason he tried to kill me. We both talked. That's why. I never made it out of the parking lot.

McLean: So you assume that he knocked you out.

Edmund: No, I... He bashed me in the head and chained me to the wall of an aquaduct and left me to die.

McLean: A rather bizarre way to take somebody out wouldn't you say?

Edmund: Bizarre? I'd say creative. He was a sadistic psychopath. He wanted me to suffer and drown and leave nothing but a suicide not.

McLean: A suicide note?

Edmund: Yeah, he forced me to sign one.

Brooke: Oh, God!

McLean: Well strange it hasn't turned up. But we've issued warrants to search Thomasen's office and his residence. It may yet surface. So Thomasen forced you to sign this suicide note. Did he dictate it's contents?

Edmund: No, it was already written. I didn't want to sign it, but he threatened to go after my kids.

McLean: So I don't suppose this is written in Thomasen's handwriting.

Edmund: No, of course not. He typed it.

McLean: We can't prove someone else didn't type it.

Edmund: What? Do you think I did it? Do you think I'm making this up? Look, the only reason why I'm here today to tell you these facts is because Brooke English is a very smart woman. She managed to figure out what was happening to me, and tie it in with what was going on with her.

McLean: Pretty convoluted.

Brooke: He made Edmund call me to tell me he was okay, to throw me off the scent. But Edmund was able to salt his conversation with some clues so that Dimitri found him.

Edmund: Thanks to you. (He grabs Brooke's hand)

McLean: When was this call?

Edmund: It was a couple of days after I was chained to the wall. He didn't want anyone to get suspicious.

Brooke: But it was too late. I mean Edmund loves his children and he would never leave them without giving someone his itinerary.

McLean: Why didn't you report this call to the police or the FBI?

Edmund: Look, because Brooke knew Thomasen was too slick to leave a trail for the police. And if she had convinced them, and if they bought the story I would be dead.

McLean: So instead she sends out an amateur out to hunt down his brother and fish him out of a deadly situation.

Edmund: Yes. This amateur did find me. Brooke you did the right thing.

Brooke: Thank you Edmund.

Edmund: Brooke I don't think you need to hang around for anymore of this.

Brooke: Mr. McLean?

Edmund: You're beat. McLean and I can finish this.

Brooke: Alright, if you really want me to go.

Edmund: You need to get some rest.

Brooke: Take care. (She kisses him)

behospkiss.jpg

Brooke: I'll say 'hi' to Sam and Maddie, okay?

Edmund: Tell 'em I love 'em.

Brooke: I will.

McLean: You know not to leave town, right?

Brooke gives him the evil eye and leaves.

Edmund: McLean where are you going with these questions?

McLean: How about this Mr. Grey? How would you describe your relationship between you and Miss English.

Edmund: My relationship? Professionally we're partners, we run a magazine. She's an excellent writer and editor.

McLean: And personally?

Edmund: We're extremely good friends. She's as supportive of me as I am of her. And she's just about the most honest and decent human being I've ever had the priviledge of knowing. Why don't you take your notepad out and write that down so you don't forget it?
